AN INDIAN ADVENTURE

Following in Thomas Wardle’s Footsteps
Dr. Brenda King visited India this year discovering more about textile entrepreneur Sir Thomas Wardle’s visit in the nineteenth century when he helped to reinvigorate the silk industry and collected Indian textiles to display in London and Manchester. Dr. King will tell us of Wardle’s journeys to India and contrast it with her experience of visiting small textile villages in the country where age-old traditions and techniques are still a way of life.

WHOSE HISTORY? A TALK BY TRISTRAM BESTERMAN

Museums release the stories pent up in objects. From the label on a fossil to the text explaining ancient sculpture or research on human bone, whose voice do we hear in the museum? The past has a way of catching up with museums and may challenge deeply held notions of cultural identity, ownership and legitimacy in the present. So what happens when the museum stands accused of stealing the object and its story?
Tristram Besterman has worked in museums since graduating and between 1994 and 2005 was Director of the Manchester Museum. Now he is an adviser, mediator and writer on museums and we are delighted to welcome him back to Bollington.
